Lightweight Casing Drift

The light weight long lasting choice!

Traditionally large bore drifts have been manufactured of metal to withstand the harsh conditions encountered in the field. These drifts are very heavy and pose a safety risk for the personnel.

GFI Composites Ltd. was asked to design and supply light-weight drifts of various diameters to offshore Oil and Gas customers.

These drifts have to meet exacting criteria including meeting tolerances to +/- 0.001”. In addition they have to be lightweight; have a very low coefficient of friction; have excellent abrasion resistance; will not shrink or swell in any weather condition, and possess good impact strength.

GFI Composites Ltd. developed a proprietary resin and fabrication technique to produce mandrels that maintain these required characteristics. All drifts begin with a light weight aluminum core. This allows us to attach pad eyes for use in the field and also provide the round starting shape of the drift. GFI then applies a fiberglass resin and mat composites that gives the drift the properties that allow it not to shrink or swell under any weather condition. The Drift is then top coated with a high Visibility orange tooling Gel-Coat.
